A 13-year-old boy living in Ejura in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, Hamisu Yussif has made face masks from brassieres to help curb the spread of Coronavirus in his community.
As the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country has been characterised with high prices and scarcity of face masks, especially in the region, Yussif decided to turn brassieres into facemasks to protect his family and the community members.
The brassieres were donated by Miss Jeanette, a member of the COVID-19 Campaign Coalition-Ejura.
The COVID-19 Campaign Coalition-Ejura is an awareness creation group made of individuals and organizations ( Fighters -Ejura Cricle, Concerned Youth Of Mempeasem, Rural Smile Foundation, Concerned Youth Of Ejura, Basma Relief Foundation, Ghana Health Service-Ejura, Ejura Government Hospital, Naagyei Fm, Today’s Radio, and the Artiste Group in Ejura ) within the Ejura Municipal that have come together to partner with the Ejura Health Directorate to help in the Education of coronavirus.
According to Hamisu Yussif, the initiative he took was his way of “showing compassion to humanity in this trying time.”
Deputy PRO of the coalition, Salim Bamba, revealed that Yussif decided to use brassieres instead of cloths after he saw a video on YouTube depicting how you can use a brassiere to make a face mask.
“We have some of our members staying outside Ghana and, on our page, someone sent a YouTube video of how a face mask was made out of a brassiere. So, I think he got that idea after watching that video,” he told GhanaWeb in a telephone conversation.
Bamba added that the brassieres Yussif used in making those face masks sample were new ones and not second-hand brassieres.
“As far as I know, the brassieres are new ones, but we don’t have enough to make more face masks out of it. If we want to create more face masks then we must go in for new braziers in the market because it is more hygienic than the second-hand braziers,” He said.
