Water resources lecturer Prof. Zakaria Issaka from Tamale Technical University has urged the Ghanaian government to adopt the Sponge City initiative to tackle frequent flooding and improve sanitation.
He and Environmental lecturer Husein Mansuur highlighted how urbanization and poor waste management contribute to floods, exacerbating the problem despite ongoing efforts.
They recommend the Sponge City approach, which uses permeable materials to enhance rainwater absorption and reduce runoff.
This method, successfully used in Chinese cities, could help make Ghanaian cities like Accra more flood-resilient and improve water management and sanitation.
