Mr Dennis Amfo-Sefah, Tema West Chairman of the New Patriotic Party has proposed President Akufo-Addo as role model for other opposition parties, saying Akufo-Addo is the person they need to emulate as an exemplary character.
“Under President Akufo-Addo, we are seeing what real social interventionism means – the massive pro-poor policies such as Free SHS, Planting for Food and Jobs and most recently the COVID-19 relief programmes that targeted the poor with free water, free food, and electricity among others.
“This is what social democracy looks like. Interestingly, our friends in opposition never did any of these pro-poor policies with their time in power. Rather, it was their style to tax everything including; condoms, and even withdraw allowances of working-class people like teachers and Nurses,” Mr Amfo-Sefah, popularly known as Nana Boakye said in a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra.
The statement, described the President’s performance amidst the COVID-19 pandemic as encouraging and useful for all other countries to follow.
Mr Amfo-Sefah, said the NDC’s supposed espousal of social democracy as its philosophy had not been experienced by Ghanaians, rather President Akufo-Addo had shown more natural knack to serve the interest of the masses.
The Tema West NPP chairman said it was because of the NDC government’s interpretation of social democracy that the Mahama Government touted itself as a socialist, while even the party’s foot soldiers were neglected and abandoned.
“Even their own media houses collapsed under their watch, while the rich got the juicy contracts. It was not social democracy at all, it was Governance of the rich, by the rich for the rich,” Nana Boakye said.
According to him, “Our opponents are suffering from an identity crisis; they tout themselves as social democrats, but over the years they have not been able to prove that. All the socialist interventions, be it NHIS or Free SHS have come from the NPP. They, therefore, need a leader from the NPP to understudy.
“If you ask me, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would be the perfect role model for them to study and learn from. President Akufo-Addo is a far better social democrat than others even though he leads the NPP, which is a capitalist democratic party.”
