Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu has described Ghana’s betting tax as unnecessary and counterproductive.
Speaking on Rainbow Radio UK, he criticized the 10% tax on gross gaming winnings, implemented on August 15, 2023, under the amended Income Tax Act, 2023 (Act 1094).
Mr. Sosu argued that using betting as a revenue source promotes gambling, especially among the youth, which could lead to societal harm. Instead, he urged the government to focus on job creation to reduce unemployment and discourage reliance on gambling.
“Betting shouldn’t be a revenue source for the national government. Encouraging gambling for profit undermines our society,” he stated.
The tax replaced a 15% VAT on stakes but has faced backlash over its potential to increase betting participation.
