The Ghana Water Company Limited has warned last night’s nationwide power outage could interrupt water supply across the country.

The entire country was plunged into darkness on Wednesday night as a result of a system failure, the cause of which is yet to be traced.

Public Relations Officer of the GWCL, Mr Stanley Martey, speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS), explained that their supply pumps were affected as a result of the blackout, hence water supply would be interrupted.

“The blackout affected the whole country so all our treatment plants are down... So we were seriously affected. Some minutes ago power was restored to Weija but we can’t start water treatment immediately. We need to make sure that the power is stable before we can start our equipment, other than that the pumps will also trip off,” he stated.

“[At] Sunyani, Abesim head works is still down, Tano head works that feeds Techiman with water is also down. We are facing the same challenge in Cape Coast, Tamale. Almost all our treatment plants are down. Kpong in Accra is still not back. We are hoping if power is fully restored we can start production immediately. So we are hoping that VRA, GRIDCo, ECG, will restore power so we can also start production.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has assured the whole country should have power by close of day on Thursday 4 May.
