Botchwey's bid: Tsikata, PV and Dumor support

Thu, 3 Oct 2002 Source: The Independent

Newspaper reports have linked two leading members of previous government of the PNDC/NDC – Capt. Kojo Tsikata (Rtd) and Paul Victor beng, a former presidential advisor and Komla Dumor, a former morning show host, Komla Dumor.

The Independent reports that the enthusiasm of the two stalwarts rekindled on the day that Kwesi Botchwey declared his intention to contest the NDC’s presidential elections. Then, relatively younger, Dr. Botchwey and PV Obeng alongside experienced politicians like Dr. Obed Asamoah and Captain Kojo Tsikata helped the PNDC junta of 1981 to gain acceptability at a time that that regime was on the verge of being ostracized from the comity of nations.

“People should not be scared by the presence of the two gentlemen, after all, they are our people and mind you, they did not leave the party, but only took a back stage because they were not happy about some developments in the party”, an elated cadre told the paper.

The two stalwarts, “The Independent an confirm, are duly on board Kwesi Botchwey train and are likely to be on the Botchwey team that is likely to tour every length of the country when the former finance minister returns.

There are other overtures, according to information gathered from Dr. Botchwey’s camp being made to Komla Dumor to handle the publicity aspect of Kwesi Botchwey’s campaign team.

“The Independent however could not confirm whether Komal, who sneaked into town sometime last week is using the shooting of a supposed documentary programme that he is expected to feature in as a decoy to assess Kwesi Botchwey’s chances before plunging …our sources in the Kwesi Botchwey campaign team have also confirmed that the man Kwesi B is due in town by next Tuesday.

I tell you, the man could be on his way into the country by now; but for strategic reasons, let’s wait till next Tuesday,” a confidant of the presidential aspirant hinted.

The paper claims its undercover representation at a meeting of the Botchwey campaign team have gathered that the MP for Ayawaso East, Dr. Ahmed Mustapha is the likely campaign manager of the former finance minister.

Another activist who is in the thick of the Kwesi Botchwey for President scheme is Sam Garba, a chief cadre of the party, who had since the 1981 revolution been an ardent admirer of the former finance minister.

Sam Garbrah in 1981 led agitation for reform in the NDC, but chickened out when his colleagues in the reform struggle decided to quit the NDC. Unlike Goosie Tanoh and the other members of the Reform Movement who later formed the National Reform Party (NRP), Sam Garba, decided to push for reforms from within the NDC.

Garba, a senior cadre of the PNDC Revolution together with other former cadres have sent the Kwesi Botchwey candidature to the northern territories, which according to information emanating from that part of the country is catching on like a bush fire.

Dr. Botchwey whose father was a policeman was born at Wa during one of his father’s numerous transfers in the Colonial Police Service and is thus very much at home with the Waala language.
