Host of Adom FM’s ‘Dwaso Nsem’, Captain Smart says public officials who are found to have engaged in corrupt practices should be treated as ‘thieves’ and declared persona non-grata.
Speaking in an interview with journalists after an event by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana) dubbed “Corruption Watch”, the anti-corruption campaigner noted that corruption is derailing the progress of the country and that people found culpable should not be “treated like human beings”.
Captain Smart bemoaned the lukewarm attitude attached to corruption cases involving public officials and called for more drastic and stiffer punishments to serve as a deterrent to others.
“Corruption is actually one of the things killing this country and the continent. We have the resources to develop, but stealing of state properties and state funds is what is killing us now. I don’t think corrupt officials should be treated as human beings. Why should someone steal one million, two million, or three million? Something must be done and very soon that will be happen,” he said.
Corruption Watch is an initiative by the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), and a coalition of anti-corruption civil society organizations including; Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) and Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability (ACILA).
The program forms part of the CDD’s quest to fight public corruption and promote integrity in public life by demanding and activating the responsiveness of all actors in the anti-corruption space. The event will also serve as a platform to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between the media, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the general public on their respective contributions to fighting corruption.
