National Youth Organizer for the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Siidi Abubakar, has sent a strong warning to the President of Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Akufo-Addo that, the umbrella family is ready to engage in a civil disobedience over the removal of Mrs Charlotte Osei as the Chairperson for the Electoral Commission (EC).
Speaking in an interview with rainbowradionline.com, he said, ‘’clearly we are not going to accept this decision by the president and that, we are very shocked and we never believed the president Nana Akufo-Addo will take such a decision.’’
Mrs Charlotte Osei, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa have removed as Chair and Deputy Chair persons respectively. The Electoral Commissioner, Mrs Charlotte Osei and her two Deputies, Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwaa have been removed from office, a statement signed by Information Minister, Dr Mustapha Hamid has said.
The removal is on the recommendation of a committee set up by the Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo to investigate alleged acts of corruption, misconduct and misbehavior by the three commissioners. A statement signed by the Minister of Information Mustapha Hamid said the committee recommended the removal on the basis of stated misbehavior and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146 (1) of the Constitution.
A statement by a Minister for Information, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid on Thursday, said the President had directed the three persons to hand over their respective schedules to the Director of Human Resources at the Commission, while thanking them for their service to the country.
“The provisions of Article 146 (9) of the Constitution require the President of the Republic to act in accordance with the recommendations of the Committee ” the statement said. But Siidi Abubakar says the NDC will not accept any nominee by the president and ‘’we are going to resist it and we are sending a serious warning to the president that, anybody he [Nana Akufo-Addo] will appoint as EC boss, the NDC will not work with the person.
We will not work with the person. We are also telling them that, Ghanaians and for that matter the NPP, should prepare for civil disobedience and march protest.’’ He added, ‘’we are not going to sit down and allow this thing to happen.
I can say for sure that this decision Nana Addo has taken shows that, Nana Addo does not have Ghana at heart. All that he cares about is his pocket. And that, we are going to resist this decision with every blood in our body. NDC will resist it.
This decision is not something we shall accept. ‘’We are sending a signal to Nana Akufo-Addo that he should know that, the destiny of this nation is in his hands and he shouldn’t make untoward decision that will affect the peace and stability of this nation. We are not going to sit down and allow him to do that. We are going to resist because Ghanaians are with us. We are going to resist with our blood, we are ready to put our lives down to make sure that Ghana works. We are ready to put our lives down to protect this nation.’’
‘’We are not under oppressors rule, we are under democracy and Nana Addo cannot be able to cow us down, we are going to march, we are going to have a lot of protests and we are going to make sure he rescind this decision if not, the country is going to be ungovernable for him and for all of us.’’
