The Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako says the Electoral Commission (EC) has caused financial loss to the state.
According to him, the EC has grossly failed to do what is expected of them despite the huge funding it has been receiving from the government to conduct elections since 1992.
Chairman Wontumi as he is affectionately called, on Wednesday August 19 labelled the EC as "corrupt and all staff of the EC are corrupt and I am calling on all the donor countries to send people down to come and investigate the issue”.
The NPP Chair said, “if they had done what is to be done, our electoral system would have been the best on the African continent”.
"As we speak, the EC is not doing anything that demands huge sums of money on the impending district assembly elections because the EC is not doing anything for the aspiring members,” he said.
In a related development, Mr. Antwi Boasiako says he will organise a three-million member demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) should it fail to compile a new voters register for the 2016 general elections.
“I will organize three million people across the nation to demonstrate against the EC if the EC fails to come out with the new voters register for the 2016 elections...demonstration is part of my surname and I promise to lead that demonstration”.
The opposition New Patriotic Party is mounting pressure on the Electoral Commission to compile a new voters register, alleging that there are about 76,000 foreigners found in Ghana’s voters’ register.
He, however, said if the security agencies refuse to grant him the permit to embark on such incessant demonstration, "we shall meet and do prayers".
"For that we don’t need police protection”.
