EC not credible - Boahen

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Obiri Boahen, has said the Electoral Commission of Ghana, despite having declared the 2016 elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party, lacks credibility.

He was speaking with a host of the Executive Breakfast Show, Moro Awudu on Class91.3FM 91.3 on the appearance of EC Chair Charlotte Osei before the Chief Justice at the Supreme Court on 11 December as a committee begins to probe her for alleged corruption and mismanagement for which two workers of the election management body have petitioned the president for her removal.

Nana Obiri Boahen has been one of Mrs. Osei harshest critics, for which reason Mr Kofi Adams of the main opposition National Democratic Congress has accused him of waging a war against the first female head of the election management body unjustifiably.

However, Nana Obiri Boahen said: "I started it from Afari Djan, I maintained that position that it was not a credible institution. Fast forward, Charlotte Osei came, I maintained that it was not a credible institution. On several occasions, I wrote letters to the Electoral Commission on behalf of my clients, the institution never responded. Look at what happened, Abu Ramadan 1, Abu Ramadan 2, I still maintain that it has no credibility, I am repeating it emphatically that the Electoral Commission of Ghana has no credibility."

In his view, the NPP won the 2016 elections with a wide margin and, therefore, it was a no-brainer for the EC to declare it winner despite its lack of credibility.

Mrs. Osei is facing six allegations leveled against her by her two deputies Amadu Sulley (in charge of Operations), and Georgina Amankwa (in charge of Corporate Services).

The two deputies are to also answer for their alleged roles in the disappearance of some GHS480,000 from the EC’s Endowment Fund, among other allegations.
