Education Minister Dr. Yaw Adu Twum has refuted claims by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, that expired rice was distributed to Senior High Schools (SHSs).

Ablakwa alleged that FDA findings and police correspondence showed political interference led to the release of contaminated rice.

Dr. Adu Twum clarified that 11,000 metric tons of rice imported under the Free SHS program underwent FDA-approved re-testing, extending its "Best Before" date to April 2024.

The rice was confirmed fit for consumption before distribution in February 2024.

Ministry spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng explained the difference between "Best Before" and expiry dates, stressing that the rice remained safe and wholesome after thorough FDA evaluations.

Both officials dismissed the allegations as baseless.
