Thu, 18 Sep 1997 Source: --

Takoradi, (Central Region) 15 Sept.,

The Western Regional Health Education Officer, Mr. Edwin Kunbatazie, has advised pregnant women and children to seek early treatment for malaria to prevent complications. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency at the weekend, Mr. Kunbatazie said late treatment of malaria in children under five years could lead to anaemia, convulsion and death.

The disease can also cause miscarriage and low birth weight in the case of pregnant women, he said. Mr. Kunbatazie said children and pregnant women who are the most vulnerable groups should avoid self-medication when attacked by malaria. He urged pregnant women to attend ante-natal clinics where they would be given drugs to prevent serious infections. He asked the public to take protective measures against mosquito bites and maintain clean domestic surroundings to reduce the level of malaria in communities.
