The family of the late thirty-year-old female tutor of Kumasi Girls Senior High School, Vida Frema, who was on Monday, 29 January 2018, found dead in the room of her police boyfriend at Konongo in the Asante Akyem Central District of the Ashanti Region has called on the Ghana Police Service to institute a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to her death.
The family believed there is more to it than what the police have told them, and suspected a foul play in an attempt to cover up their colleague.
According to Konongo Divisional Police, the woman was found with a rope around her neck hanging from the ceiling in her boyfriend’s house dead.
The police said the boyfriend of the deceased, Sergeant Bright Opoku, of the Konongo Divisional Police command, reported that he left Vida in his room for work on that fateful morning, came back and found her hanging.
Police also discovered a cut on her lower arm and a blood-stained knife at the corner of the room.
Speaking in an interview with Otec news’s Isaac Nsiah Foster who visited the deceased family residence in Ejisu Krapa of the Ejisu Juaben municipality, on Thursday February 1, 2018, the father of the deceased, Nana Bonsu, said the boyfriend (Sgt. Bright Opoku) sent a message to them on the day that Vida had been involved in an accident and died.
“We heard that when our daughter had gone to visit her boyfriend at Konongo, an argument ensued between them over what the deceased described as cheating, following a marriage agreement between the police officer and another woman and that resulted into a scuffle leading to her death,’ he narrated.
Nana Bonsu said when they went to the Konongo Police station, they were told that Vida had hanged herself in the policeman’s room after a short misunderstanding on Sunday night which made her boyfriend lock her up in the room for work and came to found her mortal remains.
“So which one should we believed now, the boyfriend’s statement that she died through an accident or she hanged herself? There is something fishy and we believe strongly that she was brutally murdered by her boyfriend, so justice must be rolled down,” he told the reporter.
“Checks at the Steward Hospital mortuary at Yakwei revealed blood stains on her dress, a rope mark on her neck, which suggested that a rope had been tied to it, there was no cut on her body but blood stains were found on her white dress. An autopsy report also revealed she was strangled, so we insist that her boyfriend (Sgt. Bright Opoku) killed Vida,” he revealed.
The family wondered why the police officer, without the police permit, personally took the body to the morgue without the notice of any family member.
“We are therefore appealing to the Ghana Police Service to open up an investigation that led to her demise because we suspect a foul play and the police officer should be brought before the law,” he appealed.
