Professor Roger Kanton, a Research Scientist at the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), has criticized the Ghana Irrigation Development Authority’s (GIDA) estimate of $40,000 per hectare for developing an irrigation scheme as excessively high.
Speaking on Citi FM's Citi Breakfast Show, Prof. Kanton argued that the cost seems inflated, especially since local water bodies and traditional systems are available.
He suggested that a substantial portion of the budget might be going toward consultancy and administrative expenses rather than the actual irrigation infrastructure.
Prof. Kanton called for a more cost-effective approach, utilizing local resources and expertise to tackle drought issues in northern Ghana.
