The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has launched a campaign to curb the use of polystyrene in mattress production due to its harmful environmental and health effects.
Polystyrene, which degrades into microplastics, contaminates ecosystems and endangers wildlife.
It also emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that harm indoor air quality, causing respiratory issues and other health risks. Furthermore, its high flammability increases fire hazards and releases toxic fumes.
Under the Ghana Standards Authority Act, 2022, the GSA is enforcing strict penalties, product recalls, and legal action against violators.
It also collaborates with environmental groups to promote eco-friendly materials and sustainable practices.
The GSA aims to ensure safer manufacturing, protect public health, and contribute to environmental sustainability.
