Galamsey: 5 arrested, 40 changfans burnt on Birim River

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners Taskforce has arrested five individuals for illegal mining in the Birim River at Mampong in the Eastern Region.

The task force also destroyed 40 mining machines, known as changfans, and confiscated two new changfans about to be deployed.

The arrests follow a recent military operation in the area.

Two suspects were caught mining in the river, while two others were apprehended after fleeing from a truck transporting new changfans.

A fifth suspect, Nana Kwadwo Ayimadu, who claimed ownership of the changfans, was also arrested.

The suspects are in police custody for further investigation.
