Joseph Whittal, Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), has expressed disappointment with the government's failure to effectively combat illegal mining, or 'galamsey.'

He criticized President Akufo-Addo for not fulfilling his pledge to address the issue, which has led to severe environmental and health problems.

Whittal called for a state of emergency, citing rising health risks such as stillbirths and kidney diseases caused by polluted water sources.

His comments follow increasing public frustration and a documentary highlighting the impact of galamsey on Ghana’s rivers and farmlands.
