The letter was signed by the party’s National Organizer, Richard Botchway, on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
According to the letter, the withdrawal is aimed at honoring the commitment and sacrifices of Akua Donkor, who was the GFP’s founder and previous presidential candidate. The NEC stated that this move respects her legacy as she was "the only person to send her candidacy to grace" the election platform on behalf of the party.
“We are by this letter formally informing the Commission of our intention not to participate in the elections,” the statement read, underscoring the party's clear stance on the matter.
This decision, the GFP explained, was not made lightly and comes with an awareness of its impact on the party’s supporters and the broader Ghanaian electoral landscape.
While apologizing for any disruption this decision may cause to the Electoral Commission's planned calendar for the elections, the GFP assured the Commission of its willingness to engage in future electoral exercises.
The letter emphasized, “Any inconveniences this decision may have caused the Commission and its calendar for the December 7 elections is deeply regretted.”
The GFP’s letter closed with a message of continued cooperation with the Electoral Commission, indicating that the party remains committed to future participation in Ghana’s democratic processes.
Meanwhile, Philip Kwabena Agyemang, known as Roman Fada and a broadcaster at Peace FM, has officially been confirmed as Akua Donkor's replacement as the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) presidential candidate. The GFP formally filed his nomination with the Electoral Commission on Tuesday afternoon.
