Professor Godfred Bokpin from the University of Ghana estimates that Ghana loses over $2.4 billion annually due to illegal mining, known as galamsey.

He emphasizes the urgent need to address this issue, warning that ongoing revenue losses and environmental degradation could lead to a national crisis.

Despite the mining sector contributing significantly to GDP growth, it has not improved job creation or reduced poverty.

Bokpin advocates for responsible mining practices and asserts that the health of the economy is intrinsically linked to environmental sustainability. Without decisive action, he warns, Ghana's economic future is at risk.
