The government has expressed surprise at Organised Labour's decision to proceed with a nationwide strike on October 10, 2024, over illegal mining activities, despite recent agreements to address the issue.
During an October 3 meeting, both parties agreed on several measures, including revoking the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2462) and intensifying enforcement in protected zones.
However, Organised Labour maintains that the government's actions are insufficient.
In response, the government reassured its commitment to tackling illegal mining and called for continued dialogue to resolve the situation.
