Government committed to sustainable fisheries management as closed fishing season ends – Hawa Koomson
At the symbolic reopening of the sea in Akplabanya, Ada West, Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson emphasized the government's dedication to sustainable fisheries and economic development.
Highlighting efforts like new technologies, infrastructure improvement, and training, Koomson acknowledged stakeholders' support during the closed season, which ends for industrial trawlers on September 1, 2024.
She stressed the importance of collective responsibility and noted the sector's vital contributions to employment, GDP, and food security.
USAID's Grace Lang reaffirmed U.S. support, highlighting the success of sustainable practices and the biological impact assessment showing fish population recovery.
The event drew traditional authorities, fishing groups, and security agencies.
