How Ghanaians celebrated Christmas in 1966
The festive season does not only come with merry-making and all the other good moments. It has also been translated as the season of shopping over the past decades.

But a very rare footage from Ghana Facts & History, monitored by GhanaWeb gives a glimpse of how our forefathers celebrated the holidays.
The video which captured busy shopping centres in the capital, Accra also showed a snippet of the traffic jam in the 1960s during Christmas. It highlighted the traditional Ghanaian market centres as well.
But for the style of dressing and the types of technologies seen in the video, not many changes can be recorded. Traffic, as seen in recent times, may not be surprising anymore as similar instances were captured in the video.
Interestingly, the culture of buying fowls in traditional markets, as well as, Christmas souvenirs were also present during that period.
The video was posted with the caption, “Footage of Ghanaians preparing for Christmas in December 1966. The last weekend before the holiday found Accra packed with Christmas shoppers from all over the country. The influx of people brought traffic jams & packed lorry parks, while Ghanaian women packed foodstuffs.”
