The Chief Executive Officer of Accra-based Citi FM, Samuel Atta-Mensah, says he has absolute confidence in the ability of the beleaguered chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, to continue to head the election management body.
“I have every confidence in Charlotte Osei,” he told Host of Starr Chat Bola Ray Wednesday, August 3, 2017.
Mr. Atta-Mensah’s comment comes at a time when the country’s electoral management body is reeling in chaos.
According to him, Mrs. Osei, as Ghana’s first female electoral commissioner, has shown courage and purpose since replacing Dr. Afari Gyan.
“I am not saying she is perfect and really, I don’t even know the details [of the chaos].
“But from where I sit as a media person looking at what she has been able to do, even from the things emerging today about the disunity among the commissioners, if she was able to drive through a successful election with this kind of disunity, then she needs to be applauded,” he noted.
Mrs. Osei and two of her deputies; Georgina Opoku Amankwaa and Amadu Sulley have been embroiled in a public spat with each corner throwing allegations through the media.
While the deputies accuse their leader of incompetence and managerial ineptitude, she, on the other hand, has fingered the duo in financial malfeasance at the commission.
The wrangling came on the back of a faceless petition sent to the Presidency, through a lawyer, by some staff of the commission who are seeking the removal of Mrs. Osei from office.
Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has forwarded separate petitions seeking the removal of Mrs. Osei and her deputies to the Chief Justice pursuant to article 146(3) of the 1992 Constitution.
