Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, has been appointed as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, succeeding Patricia Scotland.
The announcement was made during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) in Apia, Samoa.
In a post on X, Ayorkor Botchwey expressed gratitude and pledged to work toward a “New Commonwealth” that promotes inclusivity and progress.
Her appointment has been widely praised, making her the second Ghanaian to lead the Commonwealth Secretariat since its inception.
