Jacob Kabori Tetteh Ageke, President of the National Inland Canoe Fishermen Council, has warned that illegal mining is threatening the inland fisheries sector, particularly along the Black Volta in the Savannah region.

He reported that miners are forcibly displacing local fishermen, leading to a decline in fish stocks and damaging aquatic ecosystems.

Illegal mining activities are causing significant turbidity in water bodies, affecting fish populations that die before reaching the Volta Lake.

Similarly, aquaculture farmers in the Ashanti region are facing threats from miners, disrupting catfish farming.

Pressure is growing on the government to ban small-scale mining due to its detrimental effects on natural resources, food security, and access to clean water.
