Organised Labour has issued two new demands to the government to address illegal mining, threatening a nationwide strike if their concerns are not met.
At a meeting on September 17, they called for the revocation of the Executive Instrument (EI) that permits mining in sensitive areas and the involvement of traditional rulers in the fight against illegal mining.
They also demand a state of emergency in affected areas, a halt to mining in forest reserves, and the creation of special courts to prosecute illegal mining offenders.
The unions stress that immediate action is needed to combat the environmental and community damage caused by galamsey.
