The Ghana National Commission on Small Arms has expressed alarm over the recent seizure of firearms and ammunition at Tema Port.
Deputy Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, Gyebi Asante, condemned the illegal importation, calling it a first-degree felony under Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act.
On November 4, Customs officials intercepted a 40-foot container, falsely declared to hold vehicles and personal effects, shipped from the U.S.
Inside, 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds were concealed in suitcases.
Arrests have been made, with investigations ongoing.
Asante emphasized that these incidents pose a severe national security threat.
He urged Ghanaians to uphold peace during the December 7 elections and avoid linking the seized weapons to the polls prematurely.
