JoyNews has uncovered customs officials taking bribes to allow the smuggling of goods from neighboring countries into local markets.
The investigation revealed that traders and smugglers avoid paying proper duties by not using approved border posts.
Many goods sold in border communities are illegally brought from Togo or Ivory Coast.
At Sogakope and Elubo-Takoradi checkpoints, bribes range from GH¢20 to GH¢200. Traders, especially women, admitted that while bribery impacts their profits, they feel compelled to participate due to the high cost of duties.
