Mindray Medical International Limited, a medical equipment manufacturing company in China has partnered with the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to provide a modern ISO certified laboratory for the facility.
The equipment and running of the laboratory which will be done by the Chinese company and management of Korle Bu respectively, falls in line with a four-year agreement between the two parties.
The equipment; SAL 6000 automated analyser, can be used to analyse both chemistry and hormones or immunoassay.
Speaking at the inauguration of the new laboratory, Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Daniel Asare said the facility stands to gain from the partnership considering it relieves the cost burden of government.
According to him, the lab was also going to ensure speedy and efficient delivery of tests, bringing an end to the era of delays and errors.
“Korle Bu has not paid for anything. This is what we call financial engineering. We are going to run the equipment for four years while they supply us the reagent because it is not manufactured in Ghana. We are going to make sure that all the parameters in those areas are used for proper care. Because we are going to maintain this thing together, we are giving them space here at Korle Bu. Already Lynch, which is their local partner has a machine in our main lab which is already working but this is the newest model which has been procured.”
On his part, the Regional Sales Manager for East and West Africa, IVD Division of Mindray, Mr. Diego Fang said even though his company was not selling the equipment to the facility, it will not run at a loss.
“Mindray together with our partners will bring the instruments under some kind of placement. The patients can now use the machine and go through affordable diagnosis to get results. For this kind of advanced system, we also understand that it is not easy to maintain and run these things but very luckily we are here to run and support. Our company is spending a lot of resources on this system and now we will be training more people too.”
