Kwahu killings: REGSEC moves to curb attacks on Kwahu residents and Fulani herdsmen

The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) have sketched measures to curtail the reprisal attack between the nomadic Fulani herdsmen and residents in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region which has erupted for the past two weeks.

The REGSEC after a meeting today, Tuesday, October 31, 2017, at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council resolved to a proposal for government to create a fodder bank around the Dwerebease enclave in the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region as well as revive other fodder banks within the country.

The creation and revival of the fodder banks aimed to prevent the nomadic Fulani herdsmen entry into the country through the bush.

These were made know to the media at a Press Conference by the Eastern Regional Minister, Deric Kwakye Daffour about the REGSEC plans to retain calm and gain freedom for the residents in the area.

The minister also revealed that the council will propose to the National Security Council for resources to be made available for the security to embark on operation Cowleg same as it is being done for Operation Vanguard against illegal mining and was optimistic that could help curtail the situation.

Mr. Daffour added that members of the REGSEC will visit the affected areas on Monday to meet the Fulani leadership in Kwahu, Chiefs, farmers and other stakeholders to further discuss the issue.

The minister therefore assured the inhabitants within the affected communities that the security in the region is handling the issue to ensure their safety in the area.

A native of Kwahu East was on Tuesday October 17, killed at Dwerebease which was allegedly linked to the perennial of Fulani headsmen and farmers clash during dry season.

The incident escalated into a reprisal attack resulting in the death of ten people including some Fulani men. There of the victims who survived the shooting are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.

All schools within the Kwahu East District have been closed down for the past two weeks with residents fleeing their communities for their lives.

The Police who acted swiftly to restore calm to the area dispatched 85 police personnel accompany by the Commissioner of Police Operations COP Kofi Dampare.
