Police Public Relations, DSP Cephas Arthur
The Director of Public Relations of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur has defended the actions of the Police during the scuffle that broke out during the Let My Vote Count demonstration on Wednesday.
Several leading members of the group including Gabby Asare Otchere Darko were beaten with baton and horse whips by the police at the Let My Vote Count Alliance demonstration in Accra.
The police had to fire teargas and used water canon to disperse the angry demonstrators who were marching to demand for a new voters’ register.
But according to the Police they had to act because the crowd veered off the approved route to present their petition to officials at the electoral body contrary to a court order restraining them from the security zone.
“They veered off the approved route that was marked for them and used the unapproved route...and the Police had to step in to maintain law and order,” Supt. Arthur told Starr News Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Police has confirmed that over 20 members of the demonstrators have been arrested and are being processed for court.
