The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) have launched "Operation Clean the Water Bodies" to address river pollution caused by illegal mining in Ghana.
This initiative targets the Pra and Bromo rivers in the Western Region, using eco-friendly technologies to reduce water turbidity and metal contamination.
Pilot tests showed significant improvements, such as reducing turbidity from 3,000 NTU to 0.5 NTU in the Pra River.
MIIF CEO Edward Koranteng emphasized the importance of clean water for national health, while UMaT's Prof. Richard Amankwah noted the project's potential to empower communities in environmental stewardship.
Successful long-term outcomes depend on halting illegal mining activities.
