The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not undermine the peace being enjoyed in Ghana, national chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo said on Monday.
Speaking to jubilant supporters after being released at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Accra following a long-drawn-out interrogation, Ofosu-Ampofo noted the party will continue to obey the laws of the country.
The party chairman was heard on a leaked tape inciting his communicators to “take the chairperson of the Electoral Commission to the cleaners” as well as approving invectives against the chairman of the Peace Council Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante.
He was subsequently invited by the CID for questioning and honoured it on Monday.
After a marathon session with the law enforcement agents, Ofosu-Ampofo was released to a charged crowd of NDC supporters outside the police headquarters.
In a brief remark, he told the jubilant supporters the “police were professional” in handling him, assuring the NDC will uphold the Constitution of the country.
“This is the day the Lord has made and we should rejoice and be grateful to the good Lord. We should thank the leadership for keeping faith with us. Your NDC chairman is a man of peace,” Ofosu-Ampofo told the jubilant supporters.
“I’ve been in politics for 20 years and there is no evidence that any insult has come out from my mouth. I’m a very peaceful person.
“We will not undermine the peace and stability of this country. We will continue to be a law abiding party,” the former Eastern regional minister stated.
The police have slapped him with four charges over the leaked tape – threat of harm, conspiracy to commit harm, rioting and assaulting a public officer.
