Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen says chaos caused by vigilante groups should not be attributed to the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu.
The Acting General Secretary is said to have made some utterances emphasising the party’s commitment to keeping the groups including a recent statement where he justified the creation of vigilante groups affiliated to the party.
The rise of disarray from groups aligned to the NPP begun in the wake of the party’s 2016 election victory where incidents reported began on smaller scales, with seizing of toll booths and public toilets, taking over state property, attacking a law court and some government appointees.
A recent report released by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) revealed that majority of Ghanaians hated the activities of such groups.
However, John Boadu maintained the existence of groups such as Delta Force and Invincible Forces is to protect members of the party and party facilities.
Speaking on ’21 Minutes with KKB’, Nana Obiri Boahen, who seemed to support the statement made by John Boadu insisted that the Acting General Secretary has “has done well” on the issue of the social menace caused by the groups.
According to Obiri Boahen, “it is only that people do not have the opportunity to get near him”.
But in an attempt to avoid further queries as to how John Boadu has handled the increasing crime rate caused by the NPP activists, the legal practitioner said such issues do not necessarily need further probing.
“Don’t put the blame on John,” he vehemently said.
He instead attributed the increasing crime rates to massive population growth and lack of CCTV cameras at various institutions.
He continued, “It’s my prayer that parliament will pass a law that [in] every public institution we must erect CCTV cameras.”
Probed on who he thought should spearhead that agenda, he assured that; “That agenda I will take it upon myself.”
