Thu, 16 Oct 1997 Source: --

A preparatory meeting of the Upper East Regional branch of the "Northern Forum", a Non Governmental Organisation, has been held at Bolgatanga. The meeting, which brought together representatives from the three regions of Northern Ghana, was aimed at pooling their resources to solve the common problems confronting them. Addressing the meeting, the Interim Co-ordinator, Mr.. Ambrose Dery, asked the Forum to be pro-active and help to prevent the recurrence of ethnic conflicts, natural disasters and epidemics such as the Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis. Mr.. Dery said there are indications of famine in the north and declared that a war should be waged against it. On education, he said standards in the three regions have fallen below the rest of the country and stressed the need for people in the area to work out a programme that will stem this deplorable state of affairs. Later, a seven member committee was elected to draft a constitution for the Forum Members of the committee include a former Upper East Regional Commissioner, Lt. Col. George Minyilla.
