President Akufo Addo has eulogized his cousin the Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta describing him as having worked like a ‘financial magician’ in turning around Ghana’s economy so far.
The President made the comment during his encounter with the Media at the Jubilee House on Friday while answering a question on claims by the opposition NDC party that he’s running a family and friends government.
According to him, he has no problems with having one or two family members in his government because there’ve been very efficient especially the Finance Minister.
“…As far as I’m concerned he’s amazingly capable he’s been like a magician having regard to where we were and he’s been able to find a way to raise money to do many of the things that we’ve been able to do. He’s been a real brick and I’m very satisfied with the work that he’s doing. He’s not there because he’s my cousin, he’s there because he’s a very capable man. First, an investment banker in our country built a successful business and he’s highly regarded in the world of finance and investment community here Ghana and across the world. I believe he’s doing a yeoman’s job for this country and so I don’t have difficulty about that.”
President Akufo Addo questioned why his critics did not have issues with Ken Ofori Atta when he was the Chairman of then opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) Fundraising Committee which raised funds to run the campaign that saw him being elected President of Ghana.
“I’m not presiding over a government of family and friends, yes, one or two members of my family are in there, Mr Ofori Atta who’s the Minister of Finance is my cousin. He happened to be the person responsible for the NPP fundraising drive. Nobody made any criticism of him when he was in that position and I don’t think that it is so difficult for somebody who’s been the fundraiser to transition to a Finance Minister. Apart from anything else, as far as I’m concerned he’s amazingly cable.”
