A 40-year-old woman has been shot dead with her 14-year-old daughter also sustaining gunshots wounds in Bimbilla, the capital of the Nanumba North District, in the Northern Region.
The body of the deceased, identified by the police as Alhassan Rahinatu, was discovered at Alulani, a suburb of Bimbilla, when a police and military patrol team rushed to the area following sporadic gunshots.
The police also found the daughter of the deceased, Kadija Bediako, with gunshot wounds on the left shoulder.
The shooting incident, according to the police, occurred on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at about 8:00 pm.
Both the deceased and her wounded daughter, according to some eyewitnesses, were sent to the Bimbilla Government Hospital for preservation and treatment respectively.
Some residents believed the shooting incident has a link with the protracted chieftaincy dispute between the two royal gates in Bimbilla, the Andanis and the Nakpas.
According to the spokesperson of the Northern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Mohammed Yussif Tanko, preliminary investigations revealed that the husband of the deceased, Abraham Bediako, from the Andani gate, was the target but was not met.
The son of the deceased, Bediako Kamel, who was also in the room escaped unhurt.
According to Kamel, an unidentified gunman stood at their gate and shot while they were watching television.
Following the incident, there is said to be an uneasy calm in the town
In February this year, gunfire exchanges between the two royal gates in Bimbilla claimed the lives of 10 people, mostly women and children.
Bimbilla is currently under a curfew.
