A 25-year-old man, who accompanied his fellow Christians on a pilgrimage to the Atwea Mountains in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region, has committed suicide on the sacred prayer sanctuary.
Peter Yangah, an auto mechanic and a resident of Adenta in the Greater Accra Region, was said to have jump from one side of the mountain into a valley, last Saturday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Charles Atuah, the Nsuta District Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that, Yangah jumped from ‘Camp Three’ side of the mountain into a valley near Yonso, in the area at around 4.30 pm on Saturday.
He said the police had a report from the managers of ‘Camp Three’, which belonged to the Methodist Church that a young man who came from Accra with his colleagues to pray, had jumped into the valley.
DSP Atuah said the managers told the police that, the deceased returned from a personal prayer session from the bush and started behaving abnormally.
According to him, some of his colleagues tried to calm him down but he rather, became more aggressive and ran towards a barbed wire which had been used as a fence to ward off people from getting near the valley. He jumped over it and fell into the valley.
DSP Atuah said the police reported the case to the chiefs and people of Yonso where the valley was, and after two days of intensive search, the near decomposed body of the deceased was found beneath one of the steps leading to the mountain with multiple injuries.
He said the police retrieved the body, deposited it at the Asante Mampong Government Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The Commander said the father of the deceased who had then received information on the case reported at the Nsuta Police Station on Wednesday for confirmation.
DSP Atuah said the father told the police that the deceased had a ‘high fever’ some time ago and had not yet recovered fully from the ailment.
Mr Atuah said though the police suspected no foul play; it was still going on with its investigations.
