Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, a Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has stated that since presidential debates are not institutionalized in Ghana’s electoral process, candidates cannot be compelled to participate.
His comments came in response to the NPP’s call for NDC flagbearer John Mahama to debate their candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Dr. Asah-Asante explained that without formal integration into the electoral process, candidates can choose to decline debate invitations without consequence.
He emphasized the importance of scrutinizing candidates' policies during campaigns instead.
