The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) wants the Police Administration to follow through investigations and appropriate sanctions applied into the case of Police brutality of a middle-aged woman who was beaten to a pulp in a banking hall by an officer on guard duty at the Midland Savings and Loans bank.
“The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has viewed with horror and revulsion a video circulating on social media in respect of an incident which allegedly occurred at a financial institution in Accra.
The GBA is appalled that a police officer, whose primary duties include ensuring the safety of persons, should brutalise the very persons he is duty-bound to protect, with such impunity. The Bar condemns in no uncertain terms the reprehensible and cruel conduct of the police officer,” said the GBA in a Press statement.
According to the GBA, Security officers who under the guise of maintaining peace and order attack, abuse and dehumanise citizens must not escape the arm of the law and victims of such brutalities must receive justice.
The statement added:”The GBA would wish to empathise with the victim of the assault for the traumatic experience she underwent, and to stress that under no circumstance should any citizen or resident of Ghana be subjected to such cruelty.”
The Policeman who allegedly assaulted the said customer of the Midland Savings and Loans in a banking hall has been arrested on the orders of the Inspector General of Police.
The police officer is currently being held at police headquarters assisting investigations.
There has been public outrage after a footage of the said Police officer in uniform beating to pulp the helpless nursing mother emerged on social media platforms.
The 1:26 seconds amateur video shows the officer, who had a gun with him, hitting the woman on the head repeatedly and slapping her at a point, despite a desperate attempt by an unidentified man to separate them.
The woman was seen shouting amidst a desperate attempt to free herself from the grips of the officer.
Meanwhile, the Management of Midland Savings and Loans has condemned the assault of the customer by the Police officer.
In a statement issued by the Bank after the incident said the case has been reported to the police to get justice for the customer.
