Rawlings accused of another coup

The Minority Leader, Mr J.H. Mensah, has accused out-going President Jerry John Rawlings, the armed forces and the police of embarking on unconstitutional attempts for a coup d'etat or a state of emergency to disrupt the electoral and democratic process, the Independent reported.

Asking the Military to clear from partisan politics, Mr Mensah pointed out that apart from the Electoral Commission (EC) no other authority has legal power to vary the rules governing the electoral process in the country.

"They can only do so by coup d'etat which is unconstitutional under the country's democratic dispensation."

Addressing a rally at Esikado, in the Central Region, he emphasised that the military and the police have no constitutional power to dictate the governance of the country under constitutional rule.

"That power is in the hands of the people and not the national Security Council," he said.
