A leading member of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has called on the Chairperson of Electoral Commission (EC), Charlotte Osei, to step down.
The EC boss and her two deputies were yesterday grilled by a five-member committee set up by the Chief Justice to answer questions of corruption levelled against them by some unknown staff of the Commission.
It will be recalled that the EC Commissioners came under intense criticisms after the infighting between them in the corruption scandal against them.
Commenting on the issue on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo yesterday, the PPP aspiring national chairman believed that though the summoning of the commissioners was in the right direction, it “behoves them to step aside for investigations into the allegations.”
According to him, the commissioners had brought the image of the EC into disrepute and so their stay in office will only worsen the situation.
He said all the Commissioners should be made to vacate their office to “help cleanse the institution of the Electoral Commission because they’re the referees. And we will plead with them that they shouldn’t become players.”
He however, commended the move by the Committee to summon the commissioners for interrogation, saying it would help address the issue.
