United States Ambassador to Ghana has visited flag-bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo at his Nima residence in Accra, as the Electoral Commission gets ready to declare results of Wednesday’s general elections.
Though details of the meeting are scanty, sources close to the NPP flag bearer say Mr Robert Porter Jackson and Akufo-Addo discussed matters bordering on Wednesday’s elections.
It is believed the US envoy also advised the NPP leader to whip his supporters in line as tempers flare over the EC’s seemingly delay in declaring the results of the election.
“The meeting centered on the elections and Mr Jackson appealed to us [NPP] to remain calm and await the official declaration of the results from the EC,” our source disclosed.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated it will reject any results that they suspect may have been manipulated by the Electoral Commission (EC) since its flag bearer has won at least 5,441,642 of votes cast to command an unassailable lead in the presidential race while the party has also won 170 seats.
Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Sammi Awuku, National Youth Organiser of the NPP wondered why the electoral management body had refused to declare the results of the December 7 polls after voting ended last night.
According to him, the EC’s silence raises suspicions, warning that the party will not accept massaged results.
