US court uncovers Ghana made ‘intrinsically weak’ appeals in $134m judgement debt to Trafigura

Ghana faces a $111 million debt to energy firm Trafigura after failing to challenge a $134 million judgment in UK courts, according to a U.S. district court document.

The debt stems from Ghana's 2018 termination of a power purchase agreement with Trafigura's GPGC, which led to a 2021 UK tribunal ruling against Ghana.

Despite obtaining an extension, Ghana missed the deadline to challenge the ruling.

The U.S. court has now ruled in favor of GPGC, further compounding Ghana's financial burden with interest on the original judgment.
