UTAG is urging the government to swiftly prosecute illegal miners and take stronger action against galamsey, which has devastated waterbodies, forests, and farmlands.
Their ongoing strike protests the slow progress on tackling the issue.
While UTAG acknowledges recent government efforts, including military deployments and revoking mining regulations, they criticize these measures as inadequate.
The association demands an expanded mandate for anti-galamsey task forces, the revocation of mining licenses in protected areas, and the establishment of courts to prosecute offenders.
UTAG also calls for greater engagement to promote sustainable mining practices.
