UTAG stands firm on industrial action over galamsey, demands state of emergency

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has reaffirmed its intention to embark on industrial action if the government fails to declare a state of emergency over the pollution of water bodies caused by illegal mining (galamsey).

UTAG’s National President, Prof. Mamudu A. Akudugu, stated that they are ready to strike if no decisive steps are taken after a scheduled meeting with the government on October 1.

He also hinted that other labor unions may join the cause if the government does not act.

UTAG has criticized state-led efforts against illegal mining and urged the government to impose an immediate nationwide ban on the activity.
