University of Ghana has been adjudged winner of the inter-tertiary debate on corruption organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) as part of the process to mark the National Anti-Corruption and Transparency Week spearheaded by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).
With the aim of raising awareness on corruption and finding lasting solutions on how to curb the menace in the country, students from the University of Ghana, Central University College, Islamic University College and the Accra Technical University had to debate each other on the motion; “Which of these will you prioritise and why: A Special Prosecutor or Right to Information Law”.
University of Ghana represented by two blind L400 Political Students; Emmanuel Gerald Arhin and Fareed Gombilla who spoke on the need to prioritise the Right to Information Bill had an easy run as they fearlessly beat their opponents from the Islamic University College leaving them dumb as they couldn’t defend their statements as to why to prioritise the Special Prosecutor Bill over the Right to Information Bill.
According to representatives from the University of Ghana, the best way to tackle corruption in the country is to pass the Right to Information Bill as ordinary Ghanaians can now hold leaders and institutions accountable for their actions as information would be made readily available to them anytime is needed.
They reiterated their stance saying corrupt officials will now find it difficult to engage in the practice because Ghanaians would now hold them accountable by demanding the relevant information.
Unlike Accra Technical University who also spoke on the need to prioritise the Right to Information Bill, they couldn’t really explain their points well making Central University College beat them by explaining the need to have a Special Prosecutor Bill.
Central University College emerged second with Accra Technical University and Islamic University College in a tie with the third place position.
The debate which was organised by IEA in partnership with Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) and the US Embassy was held at the premises of University of Ghana’s Balme Library Seminar Room on Wednesday, December 6.
The theme for the debate was “Empowering the Youth in the Fight Against Corruption”.
