Senior staff from the Volta River Authority (VRA) protested in Parliament against proposed bills to merge VRA with the Bui Power Authority, claiming it would privatize their assets.
Despite Energy Minister Herbert Krapah's assurance that the government would not pursue the bills, the staff are demanding their complete withdrawal.
The VRA Senior Staff Association argues that VRA is efficient and essential for national energy security.
They also highlighted the existing debt issues facing the Electricity Company of Ghana and expressed concerns that the merger could worsen challenges in the energy sector and facilitate the sale of VRA’s thermal assets to private investors.
