Daasebre Dr. Asumadu Appiah, Chief of Akyem Wenchi, has warned that the youth in Wenchi will likely continue illegal mining (galamsey) as it's their main source of employment.
He urged the government to introduce a regulated community mining scheme instead of outright bans, to balance economic needs with environmental preservation.
The chief also criticized the central government for granting mining permits without consulting local traditional leaders, advocating for their involvement in managing natural resources.
During his visit, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia supported the idea, pledging a more flexible licensing process and greater traditional authority involvement in mining decisions.
