The NDC Minority in parliament has condemned the “completely unjustifiable” attempt by EOCO to “forcibly evict” the deputy EC chairperson Georgina Opoku Amankwah out of her office on Monday.

Madam Opoku Amankwah clashed with officials of EOCO after she disregarded an order by the anti-graft agency to stay away from her office. She was asked by EOCO to step aside in July 2017 to enable the latter commence investigations into some GHC480,000 believed to have gone missing from the EC’s Senior Staff Endowment Fund.

But Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, Minority Ranking Member, Communications Committee, issued a statement on Tuesday expressing anger over the “ typical Nazi Gestapo fashion” employed by the EOCO director who stormed the EC’s office in the company of armed policemen.

HOUND OUT

He said the minority believes that “ EOCO’s actions are nothing more than a desperate attempt to hound the Deputy Commissioner out of office.”

The minority questioned why the EOCO, which indicated that it had submitted a report of its findings to the Attorney General couldn’t wait for advice from its superior body but was in an “indecent haste” to evict Madam Georgina Amankwah from her office.

The statement therefore cautioned the Akufo-Addo-led administration that the minority in Parliament “would not stand idly by for the government, either through its surrogates or through dubious legal measures, to hound legitimately qualified and appointed officials of state and especially those of the Electoral Commission who are independent, out of office.”

The statement also underscored: “After over 25 years of the functioning of the Fourth Republican Constitutional dispensation, acts such as this must not only be frowned upon but must also be jettisoned with speed and alacrity and perpetrators named, shamed and dealt with to guarantee the growth and progress of our democratic.”
